What kind of PHDs are favored?

Postby ahoboke111 » Fri Sep 09, 2011 4:41 am

Hi, I'm an undergrad student who is interested in becoming a quant.
However, I know very little about quant jobs and have some questions.
I know that most quants come from Math, physics field.
Why are physycists favored in this field?
They seem to have significantly less mathematical knowledge.
What useful skills do they have?
What about Engineers?
Are there a lot of Engineering PHDs?
What useful skills do they have?
Is it disadvantageous to have a Engineering PHD than math or physids phd?

The essential issue is "like attracts like" in hiring. There are more physics phds than maths one in general. So more ended up in banks. They then want to hire more of the same.

Your phd needs to demonstrate 1) that you are smart, and 2) that you can work with real data and computations. Physicists criticize maths people on 2 and engineering people on 1.

There are engineering phds working as quants but they are less common. Maybe there are enough other options for them.

Ultimately quant is financial engineering! so there should be more.
