Model Val.

Hi Mark,

I'm interested in getting a derivative pricing job (junior desk quant), but I'm having difficulty identifying any such opportunities at the moment and imagine that the competition would be fierce for those few opportunities that will arise. Given that this is the goal, in your opinion, would it be best to hold out for such a role (i've been looking for a few months now) or would it be better to start in model validation (assuming that this were possible) with a view to moving once the market has improved (when, hopefully, I've acquired more skills and experience)? I'm concerned that the longer I go without the employment the worse it looks to potential employers.

Model val is a fine place to start. The main danger is that you get promoted... If you don't then it's generally easier to move to a front office job than it is to get one with no experience.
